New Players

We like nothing better than seeing new faces joining in with the fun. If you fancy trying out Underwater Hockey, also known as Octopush, then have a read of our frequently asked questions and contact Kevin if you have any further questions.

When do you play?

We play twice a week on Sundays at 8.15pm and Tuesdays at 9pm. For more information go here

I would like to try it out. Who do I contact?

Great decision! Please contact Kevin and let him know when you fancy coming to play.

I have played Underwater Hockey before. Can I come and play?

Sure you can! Please contact Kevin and let him know which club night you would like to attend.

How much does it cost?

New players get to play FREE for a whole calendar month. After that, if you decide to play regularly then you can either pay £6 a session, or £20 a month for all sessions. Monthly payments are paid via Direct Debt.

After your free period ends you will need to become members of the British Octopush Association (BOA) which will cost £30 per annum. This will also provide you with insurance cover when playing this sport and entitles you to play in tournaments.

After being a member for 12 months, if you are paying monthly, the BOA membership renewal will be paid for by the club.

The BOA membership page can be found here.

I don't have any equipment. Can I still play?

Yes, you can. If you decide to come and play, we have an extensive range of equipment purpose bought for use by new players during the one-month FREE trial period. See our kit guide to get an idea of the equipment a player needs.

Can women play?

Absolutely! We already have several ladies that regularly play for the club, and we are always looking for more.

Is there an age limit?

Anyone eighteen years and over can come and play. We currently have a broad range of players aging from teenagers to over seventy! So age is irrelevant!

My children would love to try Underwater Hockey, who do I contact?

St Albans also has a junior team. Please contact Kevin and he will point you in the right direction.

I have never played before. What do I need to bring with me?

Don't worry about equipment, we have set aside dedicated kit that can be borrowed in the first month to get you started. We also have a comprehensive skills training programme for new players led by competent experienced trainers.

We do recommend that you bring the following:

How will other players know if I'm new to the game?

After sufficient training has been completed, you will be safely introduced to the game. New players will be given a yellow or blue stick. This means that seasoned players will be mindful that you are new to the game to ease you in gently to the sport. This approach gives new players time with the puck and allows them to get a feel for the game.

Does the club participate in any tournaments?

We play in Nautilus every year that is held in Sheffield and the BOA Nationals that are held in Leeds and Sheffield. There are regular friendly matches with some of the other local clubs. If we get enough interest from our members, then we also play in friendly competitions abroad in Italy, Czech Republic and Germany.
